Andy
This is my grandfather, Andy. He was simple and wise, and he could shuck a clam like nobody's business. He enjoyed work, and felt tremendous reward in the ability to provide most of life's necessities to the people he knew and loved, especially laughter. 40 or so years after these photographs were made, I am sure he would not understand just how they would speak to me, or to you, who may not have even have known him, except through stories I have told.
These snapshots, so elegantly composed (by my meticulous grandmother) of a surprisingly ungraceful and just plain silly man, really tell the story of Andy. Not only are they biographical, so eloquently recording the strength in my grandpa's character, but they are culturally iconographic, offering many layers of shared perceptions regarding place and cultural tradition.
